Associated Project POSEIDON

POSEIDON, PersOnalized Smart Environments to increase Inclusion of people with Down’s syndrome, is an EU project under the Objective ICT-2013.5.3 "ICT for smart and personalised inclusion" with the following consortium:

POSEIDON aims at developing a technological infrastructure which can foster a growing number of services developed to help people with Down’s Syndrome to:

  • Become more integrated
  • Support their development as citizens
  • Make a greater contribution to society

Futhermore, POSEIDON aims at creating a framework to foster the creation of apps supporting inclusion of people with Down’s Syndrome. The expected outcome is a system with some services which facilitate the development of related applications. A few carefully selected apps should illustrate how the development framework can be used.

After conducting extensive research in conjunction with the stakeholders, POSEIDON has selected navigation and calendar services as the main target, future apps will consider practical situations like understanding and using money. The infrastructure to be used to support independence and inclusion are varied; there are components which are static at home (e.g., Virtual/Augmented Reality kit and touch table developed by Fraunhofer) whilst other are mobile (e.g., mobile phones and tablets).

Motivation for Partnership

The consortium believes universAAL will provide a solid middleware which is very adequate as valuable part of the infrastructure we are aiming to build. Reusing universAAL instead of developing something similar ourselves allows us to optimize our output and focus on what is really important for our POSEIDON project. POSEIDON recognized the value of universAAL early on when we submitted the proposal to the EC.

universAALization Plan

As part of POSEIDON, assisting people with Down’s Syndrome when they leave the house is a significant element. Therefore, many of our services are planned to be designed to function when the user leaves the home. We aim to assist the user by designing and implementing Context-Aware mobile services for the mobile devices. These specialised contexts are likely to be not just useful by the main services app itself, but also by other apps on the device, and static services external to the device.

Just as the contexts from the device tablet can be shared with static services within the users’ homes, equally, we plan for static home services to share data with the mobile device. For example, when a parent or carer is planning a route for a person with Down’s Syndrome, they may wish for them to take a particular route, or add additional information e.g. annotated photos for the route. This could be carried out at home, and using universAAL be shared across to the mobile device.

While the primarily contribution is related to assisting users when they leave the home, we hope that by using universAAL, our services can one day form part of a larger AAL system designed to assist people with Down’s Syndrome live more independently.

Planning and Time Estimation

POSEIDON consortium is planning to use universAAL as soon as possible, our project will go through different iterations, including two pilots (June 2015 and April 2016) when 9 families (in each pilot) will use the current version at the time of the whole POSEIDON product. During the development of the POSEIDON mobile services, it is in process of planning to have both a proprietary version and an open-source version. Therefore the plan is to begin development straight away to develop similar services in an open way.
